Are You The Kind Of Leader That’s A Power Of Example Or A Warning?

by | May 18, 2022

We know that mental health issues, retention issues, and burnout all continue. With that in mind, Self Compassion seems like the perfect topic for this week.

In my book, The Powerhouse In You: How to lead with greater resilience, courage, and confidence, I ask the question:

Are you the kind of leader that’s a power of example or a warning?

If I’m not being compassionate with myself and saying things like:

“I’m not feeling great today so I can’t expect the same from myself”
“I’ve got issues with a family member who has cancer”
“I’ve got trouble with one of my kids”

The reality is that we keep pushing ourselves because of one of these three limiting beliefs:

I’m not good enough.

I’m not worthy enough.

I’m not smart enough.

Which one is yours?

I had a family situation happen recently when my Mom became quite unwell. It was my OLD limiting belief (see how I added the word OLD in there?) of “I’m not worthy enough” that surfaced.

I felt like I wasn’t bringing enough to the table to support my family. I’ve got a full time practice and a team of people to lead on top of everything else that was happening. I felt like I wasn’t doing enough.

So then what did I do? I made myself feel guilty and I kept overdelivering to the point where I was exhausted. A friend said something so powerful to me

“Your value is not based on whether your Mom or your siblings or your family feel you are doing enough for them. The reality is that you are valuable now”

Once she said that, I just took a deep breath and realized that yes, I am valuable now.

I need to be compassionate with myself and let go of all of these things that are not serving me well.

I would love for you, over the next seven days, to ask yourself this question each and every day:

“How can I be self-compassionate with myself today?”

BE more kind to yourself.
BE more compassionate.
Be more forgiving.
Be more loving.
