Who Knew Two Little Words Could Have So Much Impact On Your Life?

by | Jul 12, 2022

This week, we are continuing with our theme of putting the focus back on you as a leader to pour into your wellbeing and make yourself a priority.

We know that right now we have a severe epidemic of burnt-out leaders going on right now. We’ve talked a lot about The Great Resignation. I think it is better to name it The Great Reevaluation as people question if this is really what their lives will look like, particularly if they are working from home. There is no beginning and no end, work-life and home life are just all blurred together.

What I’d like you to be thinking about in your Emotionally Fit Room is really quite simple”

JUST STAY

This is a very powerful message I received not that long ago in a mindfulness group that I belong to. The facilitator said his mentor had said “JUST STAY”.

We are a society that wants to check out, to be numb to our feelings, and yet, the very thing we need to do is to embrace those feelings. The next time you are feeling very scattered, very anxious, JUST STAY.

When you stay with it, you need to ask yourself “what am I feeling”? This could be things like:

  • Tension in your lower back
  • Tension in your neck
  • A headache

You need to ask yourself “What am I feeling at this moment?

Feelings aren’t facts. It is a matter of figuring out what you are feeling at that moment. I believe that the world continues to grieve over all that we have been through. We know that the trauma of the last few years has been felt globally. And so, people are now at different stages of grief.

Some people get in there and just take care of business. And now that they are coming out the other side, this is where the burnout happens.

For others, burnout started in the middle. And for some, it started closer to the beginning.

As leaders, regardless of whether you are in middle management or senior management, my invitation is to JUST STAY. Instead of jumping to some form of escapism like bingeing Netflix, eating, or drinking, JUST STAY with how you feel.

This can be done through journaling or meditation. Just take five minutes, each and every morning, and ask yourself

What am I feeling right now?

Once you have your answer, just sit with it.

Have yourself a beautiful day.

Remember, YOU ARE A POWERHOUSE.

Be more kind to yourself.
Be more compassionate/
Be more forgiving.
Be more loving.
