About Cate

It’s one thing to understand the reasons behind over-commitment, poor self-care and overwhelm. It’s quite another to experience it yourself. 

Like many ambitious people, I lived most of my life striving, achieving and being there for others, while ignoring my own needs. After suffering a serious burn-out, it made me recognize my mistakes and stoked my passion for helping others avoid the same fate.

I understand how easy it is to hide ourselves in busyness, work and service to others, rather than deal head-on with personal issues such as grief, divorce, or trauma.

I learned this at an early age. My maternal grandfather died shortly before I was born and my mother’s grief and guilt was a heavy burden she lived with for the rest of her life. As the leader in the family, she felt it was her role was to console others, so I decided to take on the job of consoling her.

Years later it was my turn. After starting a family, I began ignoring my own needs and taking on more and more external commitments. I was working four jobs, volunteered on various committees and boards, as well as being advisor and confidant for my friends and family. I was there for everyone else, but not myself. By constantly putting my own needs on the back burner, they eventually boiled-over and ignited – burning me out completely in the process.

Coming from a background of behavioral sciences, I realized that I needed to change my approach to leadership - and have since become passionate about personal development and self-care.

For the past 25 years I’ve helped leaders and teams deal with the challenging real life issues we all face. I’ve worked with health care organizations, businesses, government agencies and even the United States Army.

In addition to speaking and workshops globally, I’m also a big believer in the power of retreats. I run two innovative women’s retreats every year as well as creating customized team-building, and mindful retreats for organizations and clients.

I know firsthand that the best way of dealing with leadership burnout is to prevent it in the first place.

With a background in behavioral sciences and 17 years of experience as a mental health counselor, I fully understand the habits and motivations that lead to over-commitment and burnout. I also understand the importance of trust and discretion. During my interactive workshops and retreats, I connect with individuals and quickly get to the heart of their issues.


I have a solution-based approach. I believe it’s not enough to simply identify a problem and its source. Leaders and teams need real strategies and techniques to overcome their internal obstacles and build a healthier workplace for themselves and others. Hence why I created my impactful and simplistic 4 rooms formula.

Cate’s Credentials:

A professional speaker, coach and CEO of Powerful Journey Consulting, Cate Collins has been serving the real-life needs of organizational leaders for almost 25 years. With a background in behavioral science, and 17 years of experience as a counselor, Cate looks at leadership from the inside out.

A longtime member of the Canadian Association of Professional Speakers and former board member, Cate is also passionate about the speaking community in its ongoing goal of providing value and professionalism to audiences and meeting planners.Cate is also known for her innovative women’s retreats, which take place among the beautiful scenery of Costa Rica and Arizona.
